Back to Basics is based in Clonakilty, West Cork. It was started as a horticultural service five years ago by Paul McCulla but has since developed to include courses and talks, covering subjects other than horticulture. Our ethos is to create and restore gardens which are beautiful in appearance but low in maintenance. The horticultural principle used by Back to Basics is low impact organic gardening. We focus on using a vast variety of plants which create colour and interest throughout the year with an emphasis on attracting wildlife from invertebrates, and insects to birds and mammals.
Sensory gardening is also an important aspect of what we do using plants to stimulate the senses of touch, taste, smell and sound.
At Back to Basics we also advocate and teach the sustainable principles of small scale fruit & vegetable production, wild food foraging and building and cooking in a wood fired pizza/bread oven using a mixture of sand, straw and clay, collectively known as cob.
